- Wedding Story
- • HONEYMOON DESTINATION (HOTEL) Ireland's dramatic north coast has great romantic appeal as a honeymoon destination and, if you like a cosy old-world atmosphere, The Bushmills Inn will be the perfect place to stay. It is one of Ireland's best-loved hotels and, although it has grown considerably since its establishment as a coaching inn in the 19th-century, it has many features - oil lamps, nooks and crannies, and even a secret room which ensure that it has lost none of its old-fashioned charm. The tone is set by the turf fire and country seating in the hall, and public rooms - bars, the famous circular library and the restaurant are all in a similar style. The inn is known for its wholesome food and, pride in Irish ingredients is seen in 'A Taste of Ulster' menus that offer a range of traditional dishes with a modern twist: an unusual speciality, for example, is Dalriada cullen skink, a 'meal in a soup bowl' based on smoked haddock and topped with an (optional) poached egg; another is onion & Guinness soup - and, of course 'Bushmills coffee', which is better than a dessert any day. Guest rooms include six superior rooms, some with four-poster beds, and all are individually furnished in a comfortable cottage style and even have "antiqued" bathrooms - but it's all very well done and avoids a theme park feel. Aside from the Bushmills Distillery, which is on the doorstep and well worth a visit, the Giant's Causeway and the Glens of Antrim are nearby and it's hard to think of a better base for exploring this beautiful coastline and its hinterland - and, since the Magilligan-Greencastle ferry opened a few years ago, day trips can comfortably include a visit to the beautiful Inishowen peninsula in County Donegal. Rooms 32 (10 in the coaching inn, 22 in the adjacent mill house). B&B from about £80 pps; D ˆ la carte; short breaks offered. Open all year except Christmas. MasterCard, Visa, Switch • Directions: On the A2, Antrim coast road; in Bushmills village, as it crosses the river.
- Garden Story
- Only a couple of miles from the Giant's Causeway and four from Royal Portrush GC, the Bushmills Inn is one of Ireland's best-loved hotels. It has grown since its establishment as a 19th-century coaching inn, but its development under the current ownership and a newer wing was so skilfully designed that it is hard to work out where the old ends and the new begins. Inside, the tone is set by the turf fire and country seating in the hall, and public rooms - bars, the famous circular library, the restaurant - and individually furnished guest rooms are in the same style. The inn is known for its wholesome food ('A Taste of Ulster' menus offer traditional dishes with a modern twist), and it's hard to think of a better base for a golfing holiday. Rooms 32. Restaurant: D daily, reservations advised. Day Menu from noon. Open all year.
