The Covid delta variant which is also known as B.167.2. was first identified in India. This variant is causing a rise in COVID-19 infections among unvaccinated people in England. It has become the dominant variant of the new coronavirus.
Before the Delta variant entered into the United Kingdom, the three variants of Covid were;
The B.1.1.7 variant (Alpha): This variant was first observed in the United States in December 2020.
The B.1.351 variant (Beta): This variant was first observed in the United States at the end of January 2021.
The P.1 variant (Gamma): This variant was first observed in the United States in January 2021. It was originally identified in travellers from Brazil, who were tested during routine screening at an airport in Japan, in early January.
